Clinically distinct form of acquired dermal melanocytosis with review of published work

Abstract: Dermal melanocytosis is most commonly found in the skin of Asians and other darkly pigmented people. It is histologically characterized by the presence of dermal melanocytes, with or without presence of dermal melanophages. Mongolian spot, nevus of Ito, nevus of Ota, nevus of Hori, and blue nevus are most common and represent distinct types of dermal melanocytosis. Other clinical patterns of acquired dermal melanocytosis have also been described. Herein, we report a unique case of acquired dermal melanocytosis… Show more

“…This group includes mongolian spot, blue nevus, nevus of Ota, nevus of Ito and acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules (ABNOM), and other unusual cases of dermal melanocytoses that have been introduced to the literature as part of this category on the basis of similar histopathological findings. 1 Among these, ABNOM is one of the more common acquired facial dermal melanocytoses (ADM) and yet very little is known about this clinical entity.…”

“…Elongated, dendritic melanocytes are scattered throughout the dermis amidst undisturbed collagen bundles. 3,17 These cells are oriented parallel to the epidermis and will occasionally aggregate around adnexal structures and along neurovascular elements within the subcutaneous tissues. 1 The spindle-shaped, dendritic melanocytes are of the same type as those seen with the common blue nevus.…”

“…A variety of less common dermal melanocytoses, to include nevus of Sun, nevus of Hori, and other acquired dermal melanocytoses, have previously been described. 3,17,19,21 The reader is referred to the cited reviews for their fine descriptions. Nevus of Ota and nevus of Ito, described above, are unique and closely related lesions.…”
