Clinical Validation of an Office-Based14C-UBT (Heliprobe) forH. pyloriDiagnosis in Iranian Dyspeptic Patients

Abstract: Background. We encountered repeatedly, in our clinical practice, discordant results between UBT and histopathology about H. pylori infection. Goal. To study the diagnostic accuracy of Heliprobe 14C-urea breath test (14C-UBT) for detection of H. pylori infection in an Iranian population. Study. We enrolled 125 dyspeptic patients in our study. All of them underwent gastroscopy, and four gastric biopsies (three from the antrum and one from the corpus) were obtained. One of the antral biopsies was utilized for a r… Show more

“…In conclusion, this study recommended using SAT, rather than UBT, for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection in untreated patients, while pointing the need for follow-up studies. However, an additional Iranian study (n = 125) by Mansour-Ghanaei et al found high specificity (100%) and sensitivity (94%) for UBT using radioactive 14 C-urea [86].…”

“…Different studies from India show prevalence rate around 80% whereas in Bangladesh it ranges from 50% to >90%, in Japan 70%, in Africa 70-90%, in German 48.8%, in Switzerland 26.6% and in North America 7.1 to 30%. 12 From the above observation, it is clear that H. pylori is more prevalent in LMICs than the developed countries. Even Tam and our study was done in an industrial belt, which is relatively developed compared to the rural areas, our hick prevalence maybe due to lack of personal hygiene and health education.…”
