Clinical Significance of B-Mode Ultrasound of Common Carotid Artery for Prediction of Severity of Coronary Artery Disease: Important Parameters on Hand Measurement

Abstract: Background and Objectives:As a predictor of atherosclerosis, the intima-media thickness (IMT) of the common carotid artery (CCA) shows only a weak correlation with the extent of coronary artery disease (CAD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hand measured IMT value of the CCA as reliable and strong predictors of the severity of coronary artery atherosclerosis. Subjects and Methods:We performed an ultrasonographic examination of the right CCA by using a 15 MHz linear array transducer in 268 patient… Show more

“…CCA-IMT is a well-established surrogate marker of coronary atherosclerosis [ 26 , 27 ] and is associated with cardiovascular events [ 28 ]. It is efficient, relatively unexpensive and highly reproducible and does not expose patients to contrast dye or radiation.…”

In addition, there is a need for a developing a molecular imaging method that is capable of identifying the echolucent or calcified plaque on carotid ultrasound.…”
