Clinical Role of Multidrug Resistance Protein 1 Expression in Chemotherapy Resistance in Early-Stage Breast Cancer: The Austrian Breast and Colorectal Cancer Study Group

Abstract: Our data suggest that MRP1 expression plays an important role in the clinical resistance to adjuvant CMF chemotherapy but does not seem to affect response to adjuvant endocrine treatment with tamoxifen plus goserelin. Thus, MRP1 may be a useful marker for the selection of patients with early-stage breast cancer for the appropriate adjuvant therapy after prospective confirmatory evaluation.

“…Overexpression of efflux transporter ABCC1 is associated with multidrug resistance (Filipits et al, 2005;Haber et al, 2006;Faggad et al, 2009), and downregulation or inhibition of such transporters may represent an effective means to overcome multidrug resistance (Choi and Yu, 2014). Consistent with our recent studies , tRNA-carried pre-miR-1291 was able to suppress ABCC1 protein expression, and consequently led to an improved sensitivity of PANC-1 cells to doxorubicin.…”

“…Many tumors initially respond to chemotherapy; however, the surviving cancer cells frequently relapse into a multidrug-resistant state (53,54). Despite the better survival of cancer patients when camptothecin analogues have been used as second-line therapy, our experiments suggested that surviving cancer cells after such treatment have even greater resistance to complement attack (Fig.…”
