Clinical properties of a novel, glistening-free, single-piece, hydrophobic acrylic IOL

Abstract: A new, single-piece, hydrophobic acrylic lens – the first constructed with a lens optic and haptics comprised of a hydroxyethyl methacrylate-polyethylene glycol phenyl ether acrylate–styrene copolymer, cross-linked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and labeled as “glistening-free” – was recently introduced globally. Glistenings have been a significant source of clinical concern with previous hydrophobic lens designs. This new monofocal lens provides enhanced, clear optics for lens-based surgery. The superio… Show more

“…89 Another study reported an average EPCO score of 0.032 ± 0.101 for 122 eyes 4 to 6 months after implantation with the enVista lens. 88 Our own reported experience includes over 400 eyes, with no significant IOL-related complications or glistenings. 83 The biocompatibility of the enVista lens was tested in the rabbit model, using the AcrySof lens as the control.…”

“…44 Following the change to 0.9% saline solution, no glistenings in this material have been reported. 72,81,88 It is hypothesized that in the case of the lenses stored in 10% saline, the higher salt content within the lens caused an osmotic pressure difference after implantation, which leads to an influx of water and the formation of glistenings. Naturally, the capability of any material formulation to disperse water has limits.…”

“…Glistening is fluid filled microvacuoles that form within the IOL optic (especially hydrophobic acrylic IOL) when the IOL is in aqueous environment [25] . New glistening free hydrophobic acrylic IOL that contains different polymer combination and was packaged in solution was recently introduced [26] . radiation.…”

“…9 Additionally, IOLs, designed with sharp corners at the optic edge, form a physical barrier to cell migration, and reduce but do not eliminate PCO. [10][11][12][13] Although incidence of PCO has decreased since the introduction of sharp-edge IOLs in clinical practice, clinical studies have shown that LECs migrated across the sharp edge of the IOL optic in 58% of cases, preferentially at the optic-haptic junction in both one-and three-piece IOL designs. 10,14 Recently, a disc-shaped haptic design has emerged as an innovative alternative to these traditional IOL designs.…”
