Clinical predictors of inducible sustained ventricular tachycardia during electrophysiologic study in patients with chronic Chagas' heart disease

Abstract: BackgroundClinical independent predictors of inducible sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT) during electrophysiologic study (EPS) are not known in patients with chronic Chagas' heart disease. The purpose of this investigation was to fill this gap.MethodsThe medical charts of 47 patients with a positive serology for Chagas' disease who had undergone EPS between September 2006 and July 2012 at our institution were reviewed. Reasons for the EPS were the presence of unexplained syncope, non-sustained ventricular… Show more

“…In fact, it has been associated with increased mortality in patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy with CHF in the more advanced forms of the syndrome, 21 and with inducible ventricular arrhythmias at Electrophysiologic Study. 55 Thus, amiodarone should be used with caution in patients with symptomatic ventricular arrhythmias in the stage C of CHF secondary to Chagas cardiomyopathy.…”

“…About one third of Trypanosoma cruzi chronically infected people will develop chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCC). The clinical manifestations of CCC are ventricular arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death, chronic heart failure, thromboembolic phenomena and precordial chest pain [1]. The causes behind CCC development remain unclear; however, host, parasitic and environmental factors should be taken into account for a better understanding of the disease.…”

“…Due to migration, it is estimated 750 000 infected carriers live in the USA or Europe. 531 , 532 VA, especially sustained VT is closely related to high mortality, sudden death (SCD) happening in 17–50% of chronically ill patients. 533 Based on the identification of different risk factors, Rassi et al .…”
