Clinical Phenotype of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Bronchiolitis before and during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic

Abstract: Objective The main objective of this report was to comprehensively analyze the clinical characteristics of children hospitalized with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in 2021 during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and to compare them with those in the five previous RSV seasons. “…Implementing non-pharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing and isolation aimed at reducing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission also limited the spread of RSV [ 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 ]. Currently, in Poland and other countries, an increase in RSV infections is reported, with an increasing number of infections among an older cohort of susceptible children [ 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ]. Also, changes in RSV seasonality patterns have been observed.…”

“…However, differences in the age of children hospitalized with RSV lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) have been documented in certain countries (France and Spain), as children hospitalized with RSV LRTI during the COVID-19 pandemic were older. 2,3 From March 2020 to present, infants have been simultaneously exposed to RSV and SARS-CoV-2; however, few studies have examined the fre-quency of RSV and SARS-CoV-2 coinfections and whether they were associated with greater disease severity.…”
