Clinical patterns and characteristics of ankylosing spondylitis in China

Abstract: The study aimed to determine whether unique clinical patterns of AS may exist in China, specifically to explore the different clinical manifestations caused by gender, HLA-B27 status, and age at disease onset. The multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted and 1251 patients were enrolled across China, representing a broad spectrum of Chinese AS patients. The mean age at onset and diagnosis were 29.2 (11.4) and 33.5 (12.6) years, respectively. The male/female ratio was 2.7:1. Acute anterior uveitis (AAU) … Show more

“…Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is regarded as the disease prototype, and it typically affects patients at a young age. In a multicenter cross-sectional survey in China, the mean age of onset and diagnosis of AS was 29.2 and 33.5 years respectively [5]. Studies have shown that AS patients have a greater work disability (WD) compared to the general population, with WD rates varying from 3 to 50% in western countries [6–8].…”

“…Aydin et al [ 37 ] suggested that bone loss in male AS patients might be related to the level of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate. Although AS is also considered to be an autoimmune disease, it often occurs in males [ 15 , 16 ] Giltay et al [ 22 ] found that serum testosterone levels of AS patients often did not increase. Studies have also found that the relevant sex steroid hormones cannot directly explain the male predominance in AS, nor its sex-associated characteristics [ 23 , 38 ].…”

“…Qian et al found that the male-female ratio of patients with AS was 2.7: 1, and men were more likely to be hla-b27 carriers than women, with a higher level of c-reactive protein (CRP). Other researchers have suggested that the incidence of spinal cord changes is higher in male patients with AS, and their radiological progression is faster, while women may have more peripheral arthritis [ 16 19 ]. In addition, the effect of drugs on the treatment of AS is sex-dependent [ 19 21 ].…”

“…In 2017, a study enrolled 1251 AS patients from China. e results showed that the mean age of onset and diagnosis was 29.2 and 33.5 years, and the ratio of male to female was 2.7 : 1 [4]. A recent study reported that the risk of cardiovascular events in AS patients increased by 30-50% compared with the general population [5].…”
