Clinical patch test data evaluated by multivariate analysis

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of individual explanatory factors, such as sex, age, atopy, test time and presence of diseased skin, on clinical patch test results, by application of multivariate statistical analysis. The study population was 2166 consecutive patients patch tested with the standard series of the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG) by members of the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group (DCDG) over a period of 6 months. For the 8 test allergens most ofte… Show more

“…4 Sarıcaoğlu et al detected positive reaction in ratios of 28% nickel sulfate, 15,2% potassium dichromate and 11,8% benzokain in their tests of 24 substances. 10 Hogan et al observed allergic reaction in the ratios of 17,4% nickel sulfate, 8,7% ethylendiamine and 7,4% formaldehyde in their tests on 20 substances. 12 Kotoğyan et al detected 9,4% nickel sulfate out of 53 allergic reactions and this was followed by potassium dichromate 30,4% and PPD 19%.…”

“…In not a single study routinely testing the fragrance mix has the clinical picture of patients with positive reactions to the mix been investigated and compared with contact dermatitis patients not sensitized to fragrances, although it has been shown that patients with hand dermatitis and leg ulcers/stasis dermatitis have an odds ratio of2.6 of being sensitized to the fragrance mix compared to patients with no hand dermatitis or stasis dermatitis (76). It can be expected, however, that the neck, the skin behind the ear and the axillae (77) are often implicated, being exposed to products with high concentrations of fragrances (perfume, deodorant).…”

“…As an additional, confounding factor on top of such a presumptive 'baseline age effect', the topical treatment of age-related diseases -namely varicose ulcers and stasis dermatitis [5,6] -strongly influences the spectrum of allergens found in the elderly. As yet, this aspect has not been addressed in detail, and the influence of varicose ulcer/stasis dermatitis has previously been accounted for only regarding a limited set of 8 allergens in a multifactorial analysis [7]. Therefore, a retrospective analysis was performed with current data of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (Informationsverbund Dermatologischer Kliniken, IVDK), which, for the first time, undertook to explicitly address the confounding influence of stasis dermatitis on the spectrum of contact sensitisation against allergens included in the German standard patch test series in elderly patients.…”
