Clinical Outcome of Helical Tomotherapy for Inoperable Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: The Kyung Hee University Medical Center Experience

Abstract: Background: Published studies on clinical outcome of helical tomotherapy for lung cancer are limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes and treatment-related toxicity in inoperable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with helical tomotherapy in Korea. Materials and Methods: Twentyseven patients with NSCLC were included in this retrospective study. Radiotherapy was performed using helical tomotherapy with a daily dose of 2.1-3 Gy delivered at 5 fractions per week result… Show more

“…Moreover, despite the higher proportion of left lung cancer (52.6% vs 46.6%) and bigger GTV, IMRT significantly decreased the incidence of esophageal toxicity compared with 3D-CRT (Tables 5 and 6). Some previous studies also reported acceptable toxicities after IMRT (helical tomotherapy) in patients with lung cancer 19,20. It is believed that clinicians do not need be overly concerned about the likelihood of increased radiation toxicity after IMRT for lung cancer.…”

“…Tomotherapy is a relatively a novel radiotherapy technique with increasing popularity (Kong and Hong, 2014;Blasi et al, 2011). The system has dynamic fast moving multileaf collimators that can move with each helical gantry rotations according to the table movement.…”
