Clinical manifestations of colorectal cancer patients from a large multicenter study in Colombia

Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major public health problem, and its incidence is rising in developing countries. However, studies characterizing CRC clinicopathological features in cases from developing countries are still lacking. The goal of this study was to evaluate clinicopathological and demographic features in one of the largest CRC studies in Latin America. The study involved over 1525 CRC cases recruited in a multicenter study in Colombia between 2005 and 2014 as part of ongoing genetic and epidemiologic… Show more

“…If we go through the other studies regarding CRC, Mostly patients were in 5 th and 6 th decades of their lives, Only some patients had CRC whom aged were 20 to 30 years, and only 2 patients were <20 years. 8,9 In a other descriptive study, the ratio of CRC patient in men is higher than women and the average age of the patients were thirty seven year and it showed the similarity to our study. 10,11 In this study, we observed 28 (23.33%) patients found POC (post operative complication) after treated with both laproscopic and open surgery techniques and these results was similar to some other studies.…”

“…4,5 The majority of patients being males was in contrast to a study by Bohorquez et al, 6 but the early identification of cases among females were not seen in our study, which might point to a different sociocultural setting prevalent in the rural parts of developing countries. Anaemia was a major constitutional feature of colonic carcinoma and was often associated with a preceding history of bleeding per rectum.…”

“…Anaemia was a major constitutional feature of colonic carcinoma and was often associated with a preceding history of bleeding per rectum. 6 The symptoms of which may mimic haemorrhoids and therefore may often be neglected, especially in elderly males. The change in bowel habits as a symptom is often distressing for the patient, but the relation of such nonspecific symptom to colonic carcinoma does not carry strong association even though retrospective analysis showed it to be a common symptom in various clinical settings associated with colonic carcinoma, a finding that was consistent with other studies in similar populations.…”

“…1 Changes in bowel habits and the occurrence of stomachaches and bloody stools are the main clinical manifestations of CRC. 2 Colorectal adenocarcinoma (CAD), which originates from the epithelial cells of the colorectal mucosa, accounts for 90% of the occurrences of CRC. 3 It has been found that for more than 20% of patients CAD may metastasize.…”
