ObjectivesAs the largest group providing healthcare services, nurses require well-designed information systems in their practice. This study aims to evaluate the usability of nursing information systems (NIS).MethodsThis cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2015. The settings of the study consisted of four hospitals affiliated with three medical universities in Tehran (Iran). The subjects of the study included nurses who had access to and used a NIS developed by four major software companies. The data were collected using a modified version of a usability questionnaire known as IsoMetrics, based on the International Standard ISO 9241, Part 11. The questionnaire is composed of 35 questions divided into seven general criteria. The validity of the questionnaire was determined by experts in the field, and the reliability was checked using Cronbach's alpha (α = 0.91). The questionnaire was then distributed to 184 nurses.ResultsThe response rate was 64.6%. Among the seven ISO usability criteria, suitability for the task (3.10 ± 1.24) and suitability for learning (3.10 ± 1.27) had the highest mean value. The lowest mean value (2.37 ± 1.29) was related to the suitability for individualization.ConclusionsAddressing issues related to individualization and self-descriptiveness could improve the usability of nursing systems. Considering usability requirements in the design of a NIS will lead to the efficient and effective use of these systems.

Nowadays, hospital industries are aware of the importance of technological innovation that needs to be managed properly to drive business continuity and success in the future. The development of technological innovation in hospital industries has increased over time. This happens because of the desire to compete with each other continuously by utilizing technological innovation. This study has observed the existing information systems in the hospital, where the business process of the information system focuses on the hospital's internal correspondence process. This information system is called an e-office which is intended for the National Center General Hospital (RSUPN) Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo. This study aims to determine what factors influence the successful implementation of the e-office system as seen from the evaluation of user satisfaction. Besides that, this study observed what efforts were made by the PT. Vidya Sentra Utama (Sevima) to create a successful and usable e-office system, where e-office is a large and complex system that includes more than 77 divisions with different business processes. Data collection methods used were interviews, observation, and document analysis. This study contributes to Sevima's knowledge of what factors of success need to be measured to determine user satisfaction and what needs to be done by Sevima's agile team to developing information systems and provide references for further research to evaluate an information system.

The development of science due to the progressive technological discoveries led to significant changes in the people health care, requiring a more complex and demanding nursing care. Nowadays, in the upbringing of nurses, they may use several types of equipment and educational technologies that benefit from information and communication technologies (ICT), whose goal is to facilitate the learning process. Most of the emerging tools provide high-quality learning experiences effectively and economically. The use of ICT supplements traditional instructional methods. The role of nursing education is to prepare the future nurses to work in several environments. So, nursing schools need to train nurses to work with different technologies and applications (apps), in a digital world. In this paper, we aim to understand the importance attributed to ICT in the learning process among nursing students. According to the methodology adopted we performed individual interviews with nursing students. Data were treated through content analysis, after being transcribed and analyzed, using a typical statistical software. Findings revealed that students emphasize the importance of ICT in the academical process and the advantages it brings to them as future health professionals. Nursing students most usually use the computer and cell phone with the goal of doing research, gather information and interact with peers, allowing communication and for autonomous study. ICT is understood as a means for a quick and easy access to information, facilitating the learning process and contributing to take decisions in the nursing care based upon scientific evidence. It is also central in the communication between nurse and patient, and between health professionals, promoting the continuity of care and support patients with chronic diseases. In sum, nursing students consider ICT essential as a facilitator in the research and communication, not only in an academic context (in theoretical and practical classes) but also in health units' context.
