Clinical Implication of Surgical Resection for the Rare Cardiac Tumors Involving Heart and Great Vessels

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the clinical implication of surgical resection for the malignancies of heart and great vessels. Between January 2001 and May 2011, a retrospective review of the results in 12 patients was conducted. There were 6 patients with primary cardiac tumor including leiomyosarcoma, angiosarcoma, undifferentiated type sarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. The remaining 6 patients had the metastatic tumors or adjacent invasion to the heart and great vessels. Six of seven patients who… Show more

“…42 A complete surgical excision when possible should be performed and has shown an advantage in overall survival. 15,17,18,37,40,[43][44][45] Unfortunately, because of the extent of local spread and yComparison of all subtypes. 8Other includes: high-grade sarcoma (n = 2), pleomorphic sarcoma of unspecified type (n = 1), high-grade spindle cell sarcoma (n = 3), low-grade spindle cell sarcoma (n = 1), spindle cell sarcoma (n = 2).…”

“…Adjuvant therapy (radiation therapy or/and chemotherapy) is used in some cases of malignancy. Habertheuer and other authors showed that patients with malignant cardiac tumors who underwent adjuvant chemotherapy or/and radiation had a statistically significant survival advantage [ 29 , 30 ]. In fact, the therapy of almost all malignant tumors is interdisciplinary and should not be carried out by the surgeon alone.…”

“…MFH of the heart in particular has an incidence of 3% of all malignant cardiac sarcomas (4), and typically occurs in the left atrium (3). MFH has high metastatic potential and can spread to various tissues and viscera, including the liver, bones, arms, skeletal muscles, lungs and brain (11,(15)(16)(17)(18). However, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no previous reports of primary MFH of the heart with vulvar metastases.…”

“…Surgical resection is the standard treatment for MFH patients, and ideal resection involves removal of the whole tumor and a section of the normal cardiac tissue (10). However, multimodality treatment including radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy may achieve a better outcome (11). Mean survival for the majority of cases of cardiac sarcoma is 9-11 months (12).…”
