Clinical experience with the mentor alpha-1 inflatable penile prosthesis: Report on 65 patients

Abstract: The Mentor Alpha-1 IPP is an efficient treatment for ED in situations where less invasive therapy has failed. The risk of infection or mechanical failure must not be ignored. Patients should be informed of this risk before agreeing to implantation surgery.

“…Thus, infection rates of more than 20% has been reported with older implants [8]. Likewise, early rates of mechanical failure with the three-piece inflatable implants were high [8,9]. Possible problems include autoinflation, fluid leakage, tubing fracture, aneurysmal dilatation of the cylinders and connector disruption.…”

“…Another recent study from Denmark [20] was conducted on 65 patients to evaluate the complications and prosthesis survival associated with implantation of the Mentor Alpha-1 IPP. The follow-up period ranged from 1 to 96 months (median 48.5 months).…”

“…The implantation of a penile prosthesis has in the past been associated with technical difficulties and a high complication rate such as infection, persistent pain, cavernous perforation, mechanical dysfunction, malposition, erosion into the bladder and bowel and gangrene. While improved technology, materials and surgical techniques have reduced the number of revisions for mechanical failures, device related complications including infection and mechanical failure developed in 20.7–32.0% of cases 3–6 …”

“…While improved technology, materials and surgical techniques have reduced the number of revisions for mechanical failures, device related complications including infection and mechanical failure developed in 20.7-32.0% of cases. [3][4][5][6] Urethral stricture after implantation of a three-piece inflatable penile prosthesis has not been reported until now. However, urethral stricture occurring as a result of compression of twisted tubing in three-piece inflatable penile prosthesis (Mentor Corporation) implants induces a complicated situation in which multiple staged operations are required.…”
