Introduction:Vajikarana is one of the eight specialities of Ashtang Ayurveda dealing with the management of pathophysiology of spermatogenesis and healthy sexual potentiation. This aphrodisiac therapy is advocated for various sexual and reproductive disease i.e., Klaibya or Erectile dysfunctions, Bandhyatva or Infertility, Shukraghata Vata or azospermia and premature ejaculation. Vrishya, a synonym of Vajikara, is the technical term indicating spermatogenic and aphrodisiac effect of a dravya (foods, herbs, spices and Medicinal plants) including audio-visual, socio-religious effects/ sexual behaviour factors/ constants). Currently, the importance of this branch has increased manifold, as more and more people are reporting to clinics with various disorders related to seminal parameters and sexual dysfunction. Material and Methods: Various drugs mentioned under these therapies were searched including scientific data pertaining to their efficacy and probable mode of action. The search was limited to Ayurveda classics, books and published works from pubmed as well as non-pubmed indexed journals including google scholar database. The present review is mainly focussed on brihatryi (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtang) for elaborate understanding of the concept of Vrishya and Vajikarana. The texts Sarangdhar Samhita and Bhavprakash Nighantu were searched for the drugs indicated as vrishya and vajikarana properties. Results: Analyses of the textual data revealed that Vrishya dravyas act as Vajikara also, but all Vajikara dravyas do not possess Vrishya property. This appears due to predominance of stimulant action on Sukravaha Samsthana in Vajikara dravyas while Vrishya has mainly quantitative and qualitative effect on Sukra. These drugs also act on higher centres of the brain which helps to alleviate anxiety associated with sexual performance as revealed by the published scientific data. Aphrodiasics also modulate the level of the pituitary hormones FSH and LH. The drugs possessing these properties have been tabulated in the text. Conclusion: Vajikarana is the therapy while Vrishya is the property (Karma) of the drug. Vrishya drugs are successful in treating conditions of reproductive disorders and sexual performance and they have an effect on pituitary-gonadal axis. Investigations in validation of these drugs will go a long way in management of infertility.

Drug standardisation, profiling, and quality control continue to be a challenge for Ayurvedic medicines due to their wide range of dosage forms. Different dosage forms like decoctions and powders result in non-compliance from the patient owing to their palatability or cumbersome methods of administration. The present study aims to pharmaceutically process a traditional decoction, Phalatrikadi Kwatha, and standardise it into tablet form, known as Phalatrikadi Ghana Vati (PGV). PGV was prepared and subjected to organoleptic, physicochemical, phytochemical analysis, and HPTLC analysis in an attempt to define its quality parameters and standardisation. Distinct fingerprints of Phalatrikadi Ghana Vati were obtained. Out of the eight components identified, the components with Rf values 0.08, 0.74, 0.65 and 0.83 were more predominant with more percent areas 9.65%, 14.91%, 18.02%, and 40.67%, respectively Quantitative physicochemical analysis revealed loss on drying as 1.33%, ash value as 4.53%, water-soluble extractive as 15.38%, alcohol extractive as 9.63% and pH as 5.1. The study also revealed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, amino acids, and saponins. Preliminary profiling of PGV exhibited striking analytical characteristics. The physicochemical parameters were in the range of a standard tablet. The quantitative physicochemical parameters and HPTLC profile can be used as a reference standard for the quality control of Phalatrikadi Ghan Vati.

In Ayurveda pharmaceutics, herbal drugs, minerals, metals, and gems are used as raw materials. Most of the minerals and metals are obtained from the mines and hence there is every chance of impurities and heterogeneous qualities due to the mixing of various substances and impurities. Hence these minerals and metals have to undergo various samskaras (processes) before being converted into medicines from raw states and then subsequent use for internal administration. Due to these processes, the natural qualities of the drugs get modified and converted into new therapeutic properties. The present study is planned to identify some important processes of Rasashastra (Indian alchemy) and their impact on the physical, chemical and therapeutic properties of the final product. Conversion of a raw drug into medicinal form has a mammoth impact such as palatability, increased shelf life, feasibility during travelling, maintaining accurate dosing and ease of administration. Shodhana (detoxification) brings out physical, chemical and biological changes in the drug. Wet trituration modifies the analytical parameters of the drug which in turn facilitates the absorption process. Due to maranaa (incineration), toxic effects are nullified and drugs become therapeutically more effective. Thus, various processes described in Rasashastra show multidimensional pharmaceutical and therapeutical implications in Ayurvedic pharmaceutics.
