Clinical evaluation of the peak inspiratory flow generated by asthmatic children through the Novolizer®

Abstract: The medium to low intrinsic resistance of the Novolizer permits a relatively high PIF through this device. Together with the feedback mechanisms, this makes the Novolizer particularly valuable for inhalation therapy in asthmatic children with drugs such as salbutamol, formoterol, or budesonide.

“…The inspiration was simplified using a sine function and the expiration was defined having null velocity to simulate the closure of the one-way valve in the spacer. From the available literature regarding the peak of inspiratory flow in children with asthma (Vogelberg et al 2003), the duration of the inspiration phase (Marshall and Debley 2006) is approximately one-third of the total respiratory cycle and, a sine function was defined as an UDF, according to the velocity profile presented in Figure 3.…”

“…4). The Novolizer1 has a low airflow resistance which, together with the control and feedback mechanisms, makes it ideal for inhalation therapy in children [26,27]. Children aged o6 yrs and even asthma sufferers with severely restricted pulmonary function can easily muster the necessary effort to carry out the inhalation [26].…”
