Clinical evaluation of chlorhexidine and essential oils for adjunctive effects in ultrasonic instrumentation of furcation involvements: a randomized controlled clinical trial

Abstract: Within the limits of this study, the use of EOs as a cooling liquid of UMI may promote slight adjunctive effects at FI compared to CHX and water.

“…The second study is a 3‐month trial by Yilmaz et al . comparing the possible adjunctive effects of irrigation with essential oil in scaling and root planing to chlorhexidine and distilled water. Patients specifically with class II furcation involvement were recruited to the study and underwent a session of full‐mouth ultrasonic debridement using either chlorhexidine, essential oil, or water as irrigant.…”

“…For the assessment of oral hygiene, the PI was used, which was statistically significantly reduced after the treatment in both of the tested groups (p = 0.001); however, it was significantly lower in the SSI group compared to the CHX group (p < 0.05). We can explain these results by the fact that silver ions prevent adhesion of bacteria and thus influence the prevention of biofilm formation which precedes creation of dental plaque 26 . It is also important to emphasize that testing of silver activity against periodontal pathogens from the biofilm has been increased recently.…”

“…This is confirmed by a weak healing response following re‐scaling as shown by ample studies (32–35). The second study is a 3‐month trial comparing the possible adjunctive effects of irrigation with essential oils in scaling and root planing to chlorhexidine and distilled water (25). Patients specifically with class II furcation involvement were recruited to the study and underwent a session of full‐mouth ultrasonic debridement using chlorhexidine, essential oils or water as irrigant.…”

“…The available literature concerning the subgingival administration of essential oils is controversial. To our knowledge, only two studies have been published comparing irrigation with an essential oil solution to irrigation with a control solution in periodontal pockets (24, 25). First one is a 24‐week study in which subjects received non‐surgical periodontal therapy (24).…”
