Guduchi ( Tinospora cordifolia ) is a well-recognized and widely distributed traditional plant that is used successfully in Indian Ayurveda medicine. T. cordifolia has shown many promising biological activities, such as antioxidative, antimicrobial, antihyperglycemic, anti-inflammatory, osteoprotective, hepatoprotective, antidiarrheal, and antistress effects. Guduchi is a rich source of protein and micronutrients, such as iron, zinc, copper, calcium, phosphorus, and manganese. It also contains many secondary plant metabolites, such as terpenes, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, and glycosides. Based on previous studies in poultry, the supplementation levels of Guduchi range from 1 to 5 g/kg of diet (different sources, such as powder, extracts, roots, and leaves, have been used). It was suggested that this variation in supplementation levels depends on different factors, including the extraction method, the supplementation proposed, the method of supplementation (either in feed or drinking water), and the species and physiological status of the birds. Generally, dietary supplementation of poultry broilers with T. cordifolia yielded positive impacts on growth performance, body gains (increased by 4.8%), dressing percentage (increased by 7.1%), meat quality traits, and the shelf life of the meat. In addition, T. cordifolia exerted a palliative effect on the general health status of the birds through reducing live enzymes and plasma uric acids and enhancing the immune response, as indicated by the leukocyte count, hemagglutinin titer, interleukin activity, and mortality levels. Further investigations concluded that T. cordifolia showed strong antimicrobial effects against Escherichia coli and Salmonella enteritidis , with subsequent reductions in mortality. Moreover, T. cordifolia showed an ability to improve humoral and cell-mediated immunity against Newcastle disease, infectious anemia, gout, and aflatoxicosis. The current review discusses many beneficial properties of T. cordifolia , although the lack of pharmacological trials limits the use of this extract in poultry. Further research should be performed regarding the composition of the active compound, the possible mechanisms of action, and the effective doses to fully understand the activities and benefits of T. cordifolia as a growth performance improvement supplement.

Background: Pain is a very well-known symptom of many diseases and analgesics are used to relieve pain. The main problem with these drugs remains that of side effects. Herbal medicines are better in view of their cultural acceptability, better compatibility with human body systems and lesser incidence of side effects. Extract of Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi) plant have been traditionally used to treat pain in traditional medicine.Methods: Commercially available preparation of T. cordifolia plant has been used as test drug (aqueous extract). Healthy albino rats of either sex, weighing between 140-200 g were selected for the study, divided into 4 groups of 6 each (control, standard, 100 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg). Central analgesic activity was assessed by tail flick model (morphine as standard drug I.P). Acetic acid 1% 10 ml/kg aqueous solution I.P. was used for abdominal writhing model. Diclofenac 150 mg/kg oral as standard drug for assessment of peripheral analgesic activity. Results were analysed using SPSS version 16 and Microsoft office excel 2007.Results: T. cordifolia extract significantly increased the tail flick latency time (sec) (mean tail flick latency control, T100, T300 6.833±0.25 sec, 8.65±017 sec, 10.01±0.14 respectively) (p value control vs T100, T300 at 90 min, 120 min, 0.0573, 0.0198, 0.0198 in between group) and decreased number of abdominal writhing in comparison with the control group (p value <0.0001).Conclusions: Extract of T. cordifolia was found to possess analgesic activity and also exhibited dose and time dependant increase involving central and peripheral mechanisms. The analgesic activity of T. cordifolia found to be comparable to standard drug used.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendokumentasikan tanaman obat lokal yang dipergunakan untuk peningkatan produktivitas dan kesehatan ternak ruminansia di Bengkulu. Data diperoleh melalui wawancara terhadap 75 petani di Bengkulu, semi stuktur quisioner dipergunakan sebagai pedoman untuk bertanya seperti nama tanaman yang dipergunakan, bagian yang dimanfaatkan, cara penggunaannya, dan termasuk bahan lain yang ditambahkan. Setiap tumbuhan yang disebut oleh responden dicatat nama lokal untuk identifikasi nama ilmiahnya. Pada penelitian ini studi literatur dipergunakan untuk mengetahui nama ilmiah/latin dan untuk mengetahui kandungan fitokimianya. Data dianalisis secara deskripstif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan tercatat ada 33 medicinal herbs yang dipakai oleh petani peternak, tanaman tersebut masuk dalam 16 genus dan 14 famili. Medicinal herbs dari famili Zingiberaceae yang terdiri dari 7 species merupakan tanaman yang paling banyak dimanfaatkan, sedangkan 13 famili yang lain diwakili 1 species setiap familinya. Curcuma longa Linn dan Curcuma domestica merupakan medicinal herbs yang paling banyak dipergunakan untuk meningkatkan nafsu makan, mencegah penyakit, bloat, infestasi parasit internal, dan luka. Pemberian tanaman obat secara per oral merupakan metode yang paling banyak dipergunakan diikuti dengan cara topikal. Nama ilmiah dan komponen fitokimia dipelajari berdasarkan studi literatur. Medicinal herbs yang dipergunakan oleh petani peternak kebanyakan merupakan kitchen herbs dengan demikian tanaman ini relatif aman untuk ternak ruminansia.
