Clinical efficacy of therapeutic intervention for subclinical hypothyroidism during pregnancy

et al.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. This study explored the effects of levothyroxine (L-T4) replacement therapy on pregnancy outcomes in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH). We analyzed the effects on pregnancy outcomes with respect to gestational week when the desired thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level was reached as well as the length of time required to reach the target level during L-T4 treatment. This study enrolled 457 patients diagnosed with SCH upon initial thyroid function screening. Subjects were assigned to t… Show more

“…Additionally, in recent years, we have witnessed different studies where screening strategies have been used and LT 4 therapy was administered in cases of SCH and/or TAI in order to assess its effectiveness in preventing obstetrical complications and trying to increase the rate of successful pregnancies (Table 3) [67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86].…”

“…LT 4 is the first option for the treatment of hypothyroidism because of its effectiveness, costs and safety profile [14,15]. An insufficient maternal thyroid function may, therefore, be optimized with the prescription of an inexpensive, available and well-established therapy [16,17]. Nevertheless, the findings of some recent interventional studies [18,19] highlight the potential benefits and risks of the use of LT 4 in pregnant women with subclinical thyroid conditions.…”
