Clinical course and mortality by etiology of liver cirrhosis in Sweden: a population based, long‐term follow‐up study of 1317 patients

Abstract: Background: Liver cirrhosis is characterized by a silent phase until decompensation, which is defined by ascites, bleeding from esophageal varices or hepatic encephalopathy. Aim: To compare the clinical course, patterns of survival and causes of death by etiology during long-term follow-up in a large population-based cohort of patients with incident cirrhosis. Methods: We used population-based medical registries for a cohort study of patients with liver cirrhosis diagnosed January 2001 to December 2010, in the… Show more

“…In cirrhosis, there is a deficiency in the synthesis of vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors, II, VII, IX and X, which result from the decrease in hepatocyte production capacity and from the decrease in vitamin absorption in the intestinal lumen due to the antibiotic treatment which reduces the bacterial flora that produces it, the decrease in vitamin K synthesis or cholestasis (15).…”

“…Significant abnormalities of liver function lead to liver functional failure, even the death of multiple organ failure [8]. According to statistics, the number of deaths caused by liver cirrhosis is about 500, 000~700,000/year, accounting for 2.7% of all deaths in the world [2,9,10]. Therefore, liver cirrhosis has become a public health issue with a great concern.…”

“…Patients with cirrhosis have a complicated natural history characterised by admissions and readmissions over time. [1][2][3] These admissions and readmissions in cirrhosis are prevalent and are a major cause of healthcare expenditure. 1,2,[4][5][6] However, prediction models using clinical biomarkers alone are largely suboptimal, with relatively low c-statistics in population-based and cohort studies.…”
