Clinical characteristics and antibiotic resistance of Shigella gastroenteritis in Ankara, Turkey between 2003 and 2009, and comparison with previous reports

Abstract: There was both a microbiological and a clinical change in childhood Shigella gastroenteritis cases over the 22 years. The antibiotic resistance pattern appears to have remained stable over the last two periods. There is a need to re-examine the criteria and clinical management guidelines for suspected shigellosis cases.

“…Another related reason might be that much fewer patients with diarrhea desired to go to the hospital, which decreased the chances of acquiring lethal SARS infections. Another important finding was that S. sonnei replaced S. flexneri to become the predominant subgroup causing shigellosis in the Beijing area, which was similar to the trends and patterns reported in industrialized countries (Bonfiglio et al, 2002;Ekdahl and Andersson, 2005;Filliol-Toutain et al, 2011;Gupta et al, 2004;Ozmert et al, 2011).…”

“…In recent years, antimicrobial resistant Shigella strains have been commonly identified, threatening and complicating effective treatment of bacillary dysentery. Our study shows that Shigella isolated in China tend to have a higher resistance to nalidixic acid, ampicillin, tetracycline, and sulfamethoxazole than that found in many other countries [38, 39]. These antibiotics were previously used as first-line treatments and are still commonly prescribed to treat bacillary dysentery.…”

“…A possible limitation of this study could be that the numbers of S. dysenteriae and S. boydii, isolated in the area of Amsterdam, are relative low. Low incidence of S. dysenteriae and S. boydii is seen in throughout the world (Kotloff et al, 1999;von Seidlein et al, 2006;Zaidi et al, 2013;Ozmert et al, 2011;Sivapalasingam et al, 2006). The prevalence of S. flexneri, S. sonnei, S. boydii, and S. dysenteriae were 60%, 15%, 6%, and 6% in developing countries; and 16%, 77%, 2%, and 1% in industrialized countries, respectively (Kotloff et al, 1999), indicating that the distribution of the strains included in the study is similar to the distribution of Shigella species in the (industrialized) world.…”
