Clinical applications of spectral domain optical coherence tomography in retinal diseases

Abstract: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was introduced about two decades ago and has revolutionized ophthalmic practice in recent years. It is a noninvasive noncontact imaging modality that provides a high-resolution cross-sectional image of the cornea, retina, choroid and optic nerve head, analogous to that of the histological section. Advances in OCT technology in signal detection technique from time-domain (TD) to spectral-domain (SD) detection have given us the potential to study various retinal layers more pre… Show more

“…With a resolution of only a few micrometers (up to less than 1 μm with ultra high resolution systems) and a depth of penetration of several mm, OCT has become an essential tool in ophthalmology and neuro‐ophthalmology . OCT is based on near‐infrared spectroscopy and allows the observation of cornea and retina images of patients without causing damage …”

“…Optical coherence tomography is a noninvasive test and useful in the detection and quantification of macular and optic nerve head pathologies. 41 We used SD-OCT which provides excellent visualization of all retinal layers compared with previous generations of OCT devices. 42 The introduction of OCT in ophthalmology resulted in better understanding and treatment of several diseases affecting the retina and optic nerve by doctors.…”
