Clinical application of sonoelastography in thyroid, prostate, kidney, pancreas, and deep venous thrombosis

Abstract: This article reviews the clinical applications of current ultrasound elastography methods in non-hepatic conditions including thyroid nodules, prostate cancer, chronic kidney disease, solid renal lesions, pancreatic lesions, and deep vein thrombosis. Pathophysiology alters tissue mechanical properties via ultrastructural changes including fibrosis, increased cellularity, bleeding, and necrosis, creating a target biomarker, which can be imaged qualitatively or quantitatively with US elastography. US elastograph… Show more

“…For few years, elastography has been used in adults to determine the tissue stiffness in tissues like the liver, kidney, lymph nodes, breast, prostate, pancreas and thyroid [17,18]. There are a number of scientific reports about the diagnostic value of elastography in the differentiation of thyroid nodules in adults; however, there are no studies on the applications of elastography in the diagnosis of thyroid gland in children [19,20,21,22].…”

“…Sonoelastography (SE) is a new imaging technique that measures the mechanical properties of tissue [14], and has seen early adoption as a non-invasive substitute for liver fibrosis staging [15][16][17][18][19][20][21], characterization of thyroid nodules [22][23][24], and localization of prostate cancer [24,25]. In this case report, we review a case of amyloidosis of the liver with findings seen on ultrasound shear wave elastography and also review the literature on the topic.…”
