Clinical Application and Progress of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation in Liver Diseases: A Review

Abstract: The human gut harbors a dense and highly diverse microbiota of approximately 1,000 bacterial species. The interaction between the host and gut bacteria strongly influences human health. Numerous evidence suggest that intestinal flora imbalance is closely associated with the development and treatment of liver diseases, including acute liver injury and chronic liver diseases (cirrhosis, autoimmune liver disease, and fatty liver). Therefore, regulating the gut microbiota is expected to be a new method for the adj… Show more

“…FMT has therapeutic effects on various liver diseases ( Gu et al, 2021b ), such as viral hepatitis (grade 3), liver cirrhosis (grade 6), and other liver diseases (grade 5). In addition, there is an altered microbial composition in liver transplantation patients (grade 4) and a distinct signature of microbiota associated with the perioperative period ( Lai et al, 2022 ), so FMT may be an intervention strategy to improve transplant outcomes.…”

“…When we use viruses to treat human genetic diseases, we must not forget that the gut microbiota that lives with us from birth to death ( Van Treuren and Dodd, 2020 ; Gu et al., 2021 ). Gut microorganisms play a key role in maintaining health dysbiosis and induce inflammation and metabolic dysfunctions that are associated with metabolic, GI, and neurological diseases; GI tract cancers; and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases ( Zununi Vahed et al., 2018 ; Yu et al., 2021 ).…”

“…90 FMT has also become a potential therapy for the treatment of NAFLD. 91 Craven et al 92 reported that endoscopic FMT to the distal duodenum in 21 patients with NAFLD resulted in improved small intestine permeability but no significant changes in insulin resistance and hepatic proton density fat fraction. 92 Probiotics are live micro-organisms that improve the microbiota balance in the intestinal tract.…”
