Clinical and Prognostic Value of Antigen-Presenting Cells with PD-L1/PD-L2 Expression in Ovarian Cancer Patients

Abstract: The latest literature demonstrates the predominant role of the programmed cell death axis (PD-1/PD-L1/PD-L2) in ovarian cancer (OC) pathogenesis. However, data concerning this issue is ambiguous. Our research aimed to evaluate the clinical importance of PD-L1/PD-L2 expression in OC environments. We evaluated the role of PD-L1/PD-L2 in OC patients (n = 53). The analysis was performed via flow cytometry on myeloid (mDCs) and plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) and monocytes/macrophages (MO/MA) in peripheral bloo… Show more

“…In general, elevated sPD-L1 in cancer patients is indicative of poor prognosis or resistance to treatment ( 83 85 ). High sPD-L1 levels before neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) were found to be associated with younger age, and significantly increased sPD-L1 levels after CRT were associated with lymphovascular infiltration and shorter disease-free survival (DFS) ( 80 ).…”

“…However, previous studies described the weak response by PD-L1 inhibitors for these patients. Different components of the EOC microenvironment contribute to this failure [31]. Significant heterogeneity in EOC could be an additional factor for this inadequate response.…”

“…Significant heterogeneity in EOC could be an additional factor for this inadequate response. In HGSC at least four genomic classes were identified differing for immunoreactivity [31,32]. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of the genomic status of EOC and immunological characteristics in the tumor microenvironment could be predictive factors for immune therapy response [2,32].…”

“…Higher PD-L1 expression (combined positive score > 10) was also predictive of a better response to pembrolizumab therapy in ovarian cancer (Matulonis et al 2019 ). Nevertheless, the cut-off value, which may be used in ovarian cancer, is still under investigation (Pawłowska et al 2021 ; Wang 2019 ). In advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer, the susceptibility to anti-PD1 therapy is determined based on hallmarks of microsatellite instability (Oaknin et al 2020 ).…”
