Clinical and microbiological benefits of systemic metronidazole and amoxicillin in the treatment of smokers with chronic periodontitis: a randomized placebo‐controlled study

Abstract: Significant advantages are observed when systemic antibiotics are combined with SRP in the treatment of smokers with chronic periodontitis. The greatest benefits in clinical and microbiological parameters are achieved with the use of SRP+MTZ+AMX.

“…Some authors justify this use by claiming difficulties in eliminating subgingival pathogens in smokers with SRP. 32,33,34 Although there is substantial evidence for the benefits of systemic antibiotic therapy in the treatment of periodontitis in general, 35,36,37 few controlled studies have evaluated the effectiveness of periodontal treatment with adjunctive systemic antibiotics in smokers, 38,39,40,41,42,43,44,45 and the differential benefit of specific forms of periodontal therapy in smokers remains unclear. Given these facts, there is currently no consensus on the use of systemic antibiotics for the periodontal treatment of smokers.…”

“…Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization Counts of three bacterial species were determined in each sample, using the Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique 6 as previously described by Matarazzo et al (2008). 8 The assay adjusted the sensitivity of the assay to permit detection of 10 4 cells of a given species by adjusting the concentration of each DNA probe.…”
