Clinical and color Doppler ultrasound evaluation of polyacrylamide injection in HIV patients with severe facial lipoatrophy secondary to antiretroviral therapy

Abstract: Treatment of facial lipoatrophy with PAAG seems to be effective in HIV patients and no signs of complications were observed in the monitoring at 36 months after injection. Color Doppler ultrasound can identify the filler deposits and the anatomical changes of the SCT non-invasively.

“…Nevertheless, to date, there are reports on the ultrasonographic appearance of some of these conditions such as vascular malformations, lipodermatosclerosis, eosinophilic fasciitis, keloids, chronic graft versus host disease, lipodystrophy, mycosis fungoides, and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Eosinophilic fasciitis and chronic graft versus host disease present some similar ultrasonographic findings to morphea, which support the hypothesis that these entities may be variants of the presentation of morphea 4,5,12–18 . Table 2 summarizes the main ultrasonographic findings of active morphea and their main differential ultrasonographic diagnoses.…”

“…[13][14][15]19 In the clinical practice setting, ultrasound examination can support the diagnosis and treatment of early and late complications. 16,17,[19][20][21][22] In the case of hyaluronic acid fillers, hyaluronidase can be placed with ultrasound-guided injections exactly into the filler deposit. 11,23 The use of color Doppler, as in other indications of ultrasound, has been strongly suggested.…”

“…This filler has been proven to be stable, nontoxic, nonallergenic, nonembryotoxic and nonabsorbable [38]. PH produces an increase in subcutaneous thickness of both nasolabial lines, which is maintained even after 36 months from its application [39].…”

“…Faundez et al proposed a sonographic evaluation after the filling procedure to identify filler deposits, which show up as anechoic pseudocystic structures. It also allowed for the possibility to assess the rise in thickness of the treated area [39].…”
