Climate variability and impacts on east African livestock herders: the Maasai of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

Abstract: East African pastoral adaptation and vulnerability to climate variability and climate change is assessed, using data from decisionmaking processes and ecological data of the Maasai of Ngorongoro Conservation Area as an example. The paper uses integrated modeling, linking PHEWS, a household model, to SAVANNA, an ecosystem model to look at the effects of drought and a series of wet years on the well-being of Maasai pastoralists. Model results suggest that the ecosystem is quite resilient and suggests that the Ma… Show more

“…Thus, ruminant livestock rearing depends mainly on natural pastures as the major and only source of food. Human population growth along with various land tenure and land-use changes have forced migration of pastoral livestock onto areas that are too small and infertile to sustain animal production (Galvin, Thornton, Boone & Sunderland, 2004). Although integrated crop and livestock production system is practised in the study area, generally areas with fertile soils are used for crop production while the marginal and bare lands are reserved for livestock production.…”

“…Maasai communities in northern Tanzania are increasingly faced with a number of challenges related to (among other things) loss of land ownership due to establishment of new conservation and adminstrative areas and also increase of agricultural activities to meet their increasing food demands (Galvin et al 2001;Galvin et al 2004;Msoffe et al 2011). Global climate change is a significant additional stress to these communities.…”

“…Only a few of the respondents were concerned about drought as being a threat to livestock production in south western Uganda. The experience of pastoralists in south western Uganda regarding drought is apparently different from those of their counterparts in northern Kenya (Gufu, 2001) and Ngorongoro conservation area inTanzania (Galvin et al, 2004) where drought is a major constraint to livestock production. Among the respondents who cited drought as a major concern, majority of them were from communities located further north of Lake Mburo National Park.…”
