Despite the increase of publications focusing on the consequences of extreme weather events (EWE) for the agricultural sector, a specific review of EWE related to agriculture is missing. This work aimed at assessing the interrelation between EWE and agriculture through a systematic quantitative review of current scientific literature. The review analysed 19 major cropping systems (cereals, legumes, viticulture, horticulture and pastures) across five continents. Documents were extracted from the Scopus database and examined with a text mining tool to appraise the trend of publications across the years, the specific EWE-related issues examined and the research gaps addressed. The results highlighted that food security and economic losses due to the EWE represent a major interest of the scientific community. Implementation of remote sensing and imagery techniques for monitoring and detecting the effects of EWE is still underdeveloped. Large research gaps still lie in the areas concerning the effects of EWE on major cash crops (grapevine and tomato) and the agronomic dynamics of EWE in developing countries. Current knowledge on the physiological dynamics regulating the responses of main crops to EWE appears to be well established, while more research is urgently needed in the fields of mitigation measures and governance systems.

Key norisoprenoid compounds in wines from early-harvested grapes in view of climate change

In view of climate change, the scheduling of an early harvest may be an agronomic option to limit wine alcohol, provided that a satisfactory content of secondary metabolites can be ensured in grapes. To better understand the link between grape ripening, seasonal trend and wine aroma, the aromatic expression of Barbera and Pinot Noir wines produced with early harvested grapes was assessed. Attention was focused on C13 norisoprenoids during both alcoholic fermentation and after three months of storage. At the end of fermentation, the highest β-damascenone content was detected in wines obtained from less ripe grapes, the content subsequently increased significantly after three months of storage; however, the levels of β-ionone decreased significantly during the same period. The reduction of wine alcohol as a result of harvesting earlier, especially for Barbera, was associated with optimal aromatic levels as well as good technological parameters.

The results achieved in Republic of Moldova in using the potential of grapevine Gene pool over the past 40 years are significant: new varieties for diverse utilisation, designed for complex biological resistance to stress factors, for reduced pressing on the environment and for excellent capabilities for ecological agriculture. Breeding programs resulted in modernization of assortment – were created more than 80 new varieties for table and wine grapes, most of them with advanced biological resistance, and 32 varieties were included in actual assortment and other are in the process of testing. An important feature of this assortment is presence of seedless varieties, well adapted to our geographical area. According to their characteristics (resistance, quality, productivity), created seedless varieties are not only a pioneering for the assortment of the Republic of Moldova, but for the entire Euro-Asian region. New seedless varieties and perspective elites manifest an increased percentage of buds started in vegetation after the wintering. High fertility, medium to large and very large grapes, accumulation of sugars and total acidity in must favourably for consumption of fresh grapes or for technological processing, suitability for long-term storage and transportability for some of them, denote their high productive and qualitative potential.
