Climate change and water‐related ecosystem services: impacts of drought in california, usa

Abstract: We investigated the potential impacts of climate change on water‐related ecosystem services (WES). Based on the review of the recent literature, we concluded that climate change will have substantial effects on provisioning, regulating, and cultural WES via changes in the distribution and value of water over space and time. However, the effects of climate change on specific WES will be different depending on the extent of the impact of such changes in the distribution of water and the adaptive capacity of the … Show more

“…The InVEST model and its associated biophysical dataset were developed and calibrated by the Natural Capital Project in the Willamette Valley area within which Corvallis is located [17] and has been applied successfully in the other coastal areas in Western North America in previous studies [18,45,46]. This research uses the stormwater runoff yield and purification models and the biophysical data built in InVEST at 1 m × 1 m pixel resolution and combines the results at the parcel level.…”

“…The datasets were utilized in the well-known ecosystem services modelling program InVEST developed by the Natural Capital Project [25] (Table 1). InVEST was developed and calibrated in Willamette River area within which the city of Corvallis is located [34], and has been applied well in the other coastal areas in Western North America in previous studies [35,36]. The modelling process in InVEST is referred to the InVEST User Guide [37].…”

“…Compared to the wide use of climatic information and services such as drought information in agriculture, drought has a broader impact on land management. Specifically, drought affects recreation and tourism, grazing, forest and timber, and has important indirect effects for the ecosystems and species that rely on water [12][13][14]. First, drought affects recreation and tourism.…”
