Climate change and cars in the EU: the roles of auto firms, consumers, and policy in responding to global environmental change

Abstract: Car design, ownership and usage are major determinants of the degree of carbon emissions produced from personal transport. We assess factors influencing environmental innovation in the automotive sector, and behavioural changes of transport consumers in response to climate change and related policies. This analysis highlights the vital role of policy drivers in both supply--side innovation and demand--side change, and considers the efficacy of recent EU policy measures. We argue that the limited progress towar… Show more

“…16 Such (perceived) infrastructural constraints are not the only reason that personal car use is often the preferred form of transport for individuals . Ownership of a standard road vehicle may also be preferred due to the accumulation of cultural and symbolic value of cars (Urry, 2004;Whitmarsh & Köhler, 2010;Kanger & Schott, 2016). For instance, owning a vehicle is often perceived as a symbol of status (Steg, 2005), whilst the vehicle itself may be perceived by an individual as representative of his or her self-identity (Barbarossa et al, 2015;Kressmann et al, 2006).…”

“…The success of this proposition, however, hinges largely on whether public transport offers attractive alternatives to using private cars (Susniené, Sargünas 2008;Lo et al 2010). Car design, ownership and use are clearly major determinants of the degree of carbon emissions produced as a result of personal transport (Whitmarsh, Köhler 2010). …”

“…A number of works point out the challenges for the industry, which is facing uncertainty with regard to future technologies and strategies [22][23][24]. The automotive industries activities are interpreted as a response against pressures from external actors, like regulators, consumers or competitors.…”
