Climate Change Adaptation for Food Security and Gendered-Land Rights in Western Kenya

Abstract: This paper argues that for any community transformation to be achieved, cultural values and legal frameworks, which influence issues relating to land rights and food security, must form an integral part of any policy intervention efforts. We adopted feminism as both a methodological and an analytical framework. The dominant research paradigm was qualitative. The study sample was 184 people obtained using a systematic sampling method. Data collection was through focus groups and interviews. We challenge contemp… Show more

“…However, the existence of urbanization with built-up land tenure is increasing the air temperature. On the other hand, the further south of Jakarta, the temperature change is not too significant because it is a highland that initially has a lower temperature (Etale & Simatele, 2021;Zeigler, 2019). Therefore, as a recommendation, it is necessary to affirm climate control through controlling land cover changes, including creating green-building, limiting development, and revitalizing green belts in Greater Jakarta to prevent other conurbation.…”

“…Water scarcity is a major challenge threatening agricultural productivity in tropical Africa (Etale and Simatele, 2021; Lottering et al, 2020). The frequency of droughts occurring has gradually been increasing in the past decades, intensifying in severity, duration, and the way people are affected by water scarcity.…”

“…For example, Carr et al (2016) estimated that international trade reduces the international inequality in food availability by 25%–33% relative to the distribution of food production. In resource poorer areas, misuse of resources including land and water would fuel resource competition and conflict (Etale and Simatele, 2021), further complicating the challenge of food insecurity. Part of the food requirement gap can be bridged by increasing land-use efficiency, that is, food production per cropland area, through technological progress.…”

“…It has been conclusively argued that, although climate change is a global concern, its impacts are disproportionally felt by the poor people living in the poor countries of the world [25,26]. Sub-Saharan Africa has been identified and is projected to be a region that will and is most susceptible and vulnerable to climate change impacts due, in part, to a large presence of poor people on the continent, weak institutional and policy frameworks, a lack of infrastructure, stagnation, deterioration in the economic systems, and a general lack of political will [27,28]. Furthermore, Africa suffers from low levels of technological advancement, education, rapid population growth, high rates of poverty, and a lack of social safety nets [18][19][20][21].…”
