“…1980 and favoured the spread of fish such as herring along the Murman coast. This culminated in 2006 when the influx of warm Atlantic water reached a maximum (Krasnov & Barrett 1997;Matishov et al 2012;Ingvaldsen 2016) after a period when herring was the commonest food item found in the colony at Kharlov (Melnikov 2006). Sightings at Kharlov of eight birds that had been ringed in northern Norwegian colonies, five (four ringed as chicks and one as an adult) from Hovsflesa (a colony in Lofoten that was found suddenly abandoned in 2001 [Barrett 2008]) and three ringed as chicks at Storstappen suggest that some of the increase was due to Norwegian birds taking advantage of this opportunity.…”

“…For example, cold periods occurred in the late 1960s, late 1970s and early 1980s, and another short period centered on 1998. During this latter period Kola Bay/Murmansk Fjord became frozen for only the fourth time during the twentieth century (Matishov et al 2012). Periods of several consecutive positive seasonal SAT anomalies are relatively scarce in the first part of the time series, with the early 1970s and late 1980s being exceptions.…”

“…extending for about 400 km north-south and 500 km east-west, and is situated between the Barents Sea to the north and the White Sea to the south and east. The climate is subject to the moderating influence of the ocean, being dominated by the advection of heat and moisture from the North Atlantic, and in particular the North Atlantic Current that flows along its northern shore (e.g., Filatov et al 2005;Matishov et al 2012). As a consequence, the regional climate comprises cool, rainy summers and relatively mild winters (Ilyashuk et al 2013).…”

“…During warm years, Atlantic inflow is stronger and displaces capelin northwards, towards the Polar Front (Gjøsaeter 1998). 2011 was such a warm year (Matishov et al 2012) and the Atlantic inflow may have triggered a spatial shift in the distribution of capelin. Kittiwakes may have tracked capelin distribution far north but they ultimately had to switch to alternative prey, probably because capelin became less abundant, less accessible at the surface or too far from the colony.…”
