Clearance of mucus by simulated cough

Abstract: We examined the relationship between mucus rheology, depth of mucus layer, and clearance by simulated cough. A model trachea was constructed of rigid Plexiglas of rectangular cross section (1 X 2 X 35 cm). The bottom of the trachea was lined with mucus simulants, gels prepared from locust bean gum cross-linked with sodium borate. Cough was simulated by opening a solenoid valve connecting the model trachea to a pressurized tank. An upstream flow-constrictive element was used to shape the flow profile of the sim… Show more

“…The in vitro representation of cough was performed using a simulated cough machine, (22) consisting of a simple airway model (a PVC tube), measuring 4 mm in internal diameter and 30 cm in length, within which the sputum samples were placed. This model was connected to a latex tube that linked it to a solenoid valve, which was connected to a timing system.…”

“…Analysis of the cough machine mucus transport was completed according to the model described by King et al 13 The model was composed of a pressure source (oxygen cylinder), a solenoid valve, and a simple scheme of airways, represented by a dry acrylic cylinder measuring 30 cm in length and 4 mm in internal diameter, with the 3 elements connected in a series. 14 When the cough simulator machine was activated, the timing device controlled the opening of the solenoid for one second, allowing the exit of air at 4.2 kgf/cm 2 of pressure, thus moving the secretion sample.…”

“…The in vitro analysis of transportation by cough and sneeze uses an equipment called "cough simulator", adapted from King et al 29 . It is made up of a compressed air reservoir which predicts air flow and is controlled by a solenoid valve, followed by a resistance which provides the turbulent flow -similar to that of cough and sneeze 1 .…”
