Clear cell tumor of the lung: a case report and literature review

Abstract: Clear cell tumor of the lung is a rare and benign pulmonary tumor; only sporadic cases have been reported. Here, we report the case of a 38-year-old man with recurrent cough, blood-streaked sputum and left chest pain. A chest computed tomography scan showed a round, homogeneous pulmonary mass in the left lower lobe, which exhibited intense heterogeneous enhancement in the arterial phase and homogeneous in the delay phase after injecting a contrast agent. The patient underwent a fine-needle aspiration biopsy an… Show more

“…[12] After administration of contrast medium, the key characteristic of CCTL is the intense heterogenous enhancement in the arterial phase and an early washout pattern in delay phases. [8,14] In our report, these 2 patients’ tumors are located in the peripheral portion of pulmonary parenchyma measuring less than 3 cm in diameter. The typical curvilinear or circular patterns of enhancement in the arterial phase are presumably caused by the thin-walled vessels within the tumor.…”

“…Patients usually range in age from 8 to 73 years with equal sex prevalence, especially in middle-aged and elder people. [7,8] The biological behavior of this neoplasm is traditionally considered benign; however, malignant CCTL has also been discovered and reported in several other literatures. [9–12] Certain clinicopathologic features such as a diameter >2.5 cm, the presence of symptoms, and extensive necrosis or abundant mitoses visible under an optical microscope are correlated with more aggressive behavior.…”

“…Most CCTLs have no symptoms and are usually incidentally discovered on routine chest radiography or CT scan (4). On chest radiographs, CCTLs present as a coin lesion or peripheral solitary nodule with well-defined smooth margins (5,7). Because of the rich vascular stroma, most CCTLs show homogenous intense enhancement on CT scans.…”

“…Clear cell tumor of the lung (CCTL) is a rare histological subtype of large cell carcinoma according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification, and is also known as a “sugar tumor” because there is an abundance of glycogen in the cytoplasm . The first case presentation was reported by Liebow and Castleman in 1963, and since then approximately 60 cases have been reported in the literature …”
