Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma of maxilla: A case report and mini review

Abstract: Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma is a rare odontogenic tumor occurring predominantly in posterior mandible during 5th-7th decades with a female predilection. It is a potentially aggressive tumor, capable of frequent recurrences and loco-regional and distant metastases. Till date, only 73 cases have been reported in the literature. Current case is of a 55-year-old woman with tumor mass extending from canine to molar region on the left maxillary arch. Being locally aggressive tumor with the capacity to metastasi… Show more

“…Clear cell ameloblastoma exhibits peripheral tall columnar cells with palisading and reverse nuclear polarity as well as immunopositivity for calretinin, CK8, CK13 and CK19. [ 9 ] In the present case, although CK19 positivity was seen, both the histopathological features were missing. CCOC manifests as one of the three histological variants (biphasic, monophasic and ameloblastomatous).…”

“…The ameloblastomatous pattern is least common, characterized by the presence of clear cells inside the follicular network. [ 9 10 ] The degree of nuclear pleomorphism, hyperchromatism, and mitotic figures are variable. Encapsulation is rarely present.…”

“…Initially classified as a benign neoplasm with the tendency to local invasion., in 2005 the World Health Organization redefined CCOC as a malignant tumor of odontogenic origin, characterized by local recurrence and presence of nodal metastases. Due to its infrequency, diagnostic criteria, protocols, and prognosis of CCOC are often not fully understood [2,3]. Additionally, CCOC shares comparable clinical and pathological characteristics with other diseases, possibly leading to misdiagnosis [4].…”
