Clean Ion-Exchange Technologies. I. Synthesis of Chlorine-Free Potassium Fertilizers by an Ion-Exchange Isothermal Supersaturation Technique

Abstract: This paper reports the results of studying ion-exchange synthesis of chlorine-free potassium sulfate from KCl and Na2SO4 on strong acid cation-exchange and strong base anion-exchange resins using an ion-exchange isothermal supersaturation (IXISS) effect. This effect is observed for a number of ion-exchange systems, where the ion-exchange process is accompanied by the formation of a stable supersaturated solution of slightly or sparingly soluble substances in the interstitial space of ion-exchange columns. The … Show more

“…In the case of Ca 2+ , the observed increase in the degree of conversion in comparison with the bi-phasic system may be attributed to the 'supersaturation' effect that occurs in the mixed bed system. This supersaturation stabilizes the solution within the column interstitial space and the eluate collected can start to crystallize either spontaneously, 27,28 or after a certain period of time. 10 Thus, both Ca 2+ and F − would benefit from such an effect, but it is only noticed for Ca 2+ because of its low values.…”

“…Three previous articles in this series were also focused on the development of GIET-type processes for (1) the ion-exchange synthesis of chlorine-free potassium fertilizers, 9 (2) the recovery of high-purity magnesium compounds from seawater, 10 and (3) the temperatureenhanced ion-exchange synthesis of potassium hydroxide. 11 The present work reports the results on the further development of the GIET concept obtained by the development of an optimal ion-exchange material for the self-sustaining process of the decalcification of highly mineralized waters (seawater).…”

“…The first two papers of this series reported the results obtained by studying the IE synthesis of chlorine-free potassium fertilizers (Muraviev et al, 1998a) and the high-purity magnesium compounds by using seawater as the initial magnesium source (Khamizov et al, 1998). The present (third) paper is dedicated to the IE synthesis of potassium hydroxide.…”
