Abstract. -Based on photometry of the brightest blue stars we derived distance moduli for NGC 628 and its dwarf irregular companions: DDO 13, UGC 1171, UGC 1104, and K 10. The mean modulus of the group is estimated to be 29.46 mag with a formal (internal) error of 0.11. The total mass to luminosity ratio of 40 M /L seems sufficient for NGC 628 to keep its companions in bound orbits.

Abstract. By using images from the HST/WFPC2/ACS archive, we have analyzed the spatial distribution of the AGB and RGB stars along the galactocentric radius of nearby spiral galaxies M 81, NGC 300 and NGC 55. Examining color-magnitude diagrams and stellar luminosity functions, we gauge the stellar contents of the surroundings of the three galaxies. The red giant population (RGB) identified at large galactocentric radii yields a distance of 3.85 ± 0.08 Mpc for M 81, 2.12 ± 0.10 Mpc for NGC 55, and 2.00± 0.13 Mpc for NGC 300, and a mean stellar metallicity of −0.65, −1.25, and −0.87 respectively. We find that there are two number density gradients of RGB stars along the radius, which correspond to the thick disk and halo components of the galaxies. We confirm the presence of a metallicity gradient of evolved stars in these galaxies, based on the systematic changes of the color distribution of red giant stars. These results imply that the thick disk might be a general feature of spiral galaxies, and endorse a further investigation of the outer stellar edges of nearby spirals, which is critical in constraining the origin and evolution of galaxies.

Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope images, we have performed stellar photometry for the galaxy M 101 and other neighboring galaxies located at a small angular distance from M 101 and having radial velocities similar to that of M 101: M 51, M 63, NGC 5474, NGC 5477, UGC 9405, Ho IV, KUG1413+573, and others. Based on the TRGB method, we have determined the distances to these galaxies. We have found that the M 101 group lies at a distance of 6.8 Mpc and is a small compact galaxy group consisting of four galaxies: NGC 5474, NGC 5477, UGC 9405, and Ho IV. The bright massive galaxies M 51 and M 63 are considerably farther (D = 9.0 and 9.3 Mpc, respectively) than the M 101 group and do not belong to it. Applying the virial theorem to 27 objects (H II regions and galaxies), M 101 satellites located at different distances from the galaxy, has revealed an increase in the dynamical mass of M 101 with increasing sizes of the system of satellites used in calculating the mass. The maximum calculated mass of M 101 is 7.5 × 10 11 M . The dynamical mass of M 101 calculated on the basis of the four galaxies constituting the group is 6.2 × 10 11 M . The mass-to-light ratio for this mass is M/L = 18 (at the adopted luminosity of M 101, M B = −20.8).

Abstract. We report V−band and I−band CCD stellar and surface photometry of the galaxy NGC 404 , taken with HST WFPC2 and the 2.5 m Nordic telescope. The colour-magnitude diagram for the stars in this galaxy is typical of that of spheroidal systems (i.e. it lacks luminous, young stars but contains a large number of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) and Red Giant Branch (RGB) stars). The disk of the galaxy is mostly dominated by red giant stars while its bulge consists of both the AGB and RGB population. Using the distance indicator technique, based on the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), we find a distance of 3.42 ± 0.25 Mpc for this galaxy. Global photometric characteristic of this galaxy were then measured out to a radius of 3 , giving V = 10. m 04 and I = 8. m 95. We find (V − I) = 0.3 for the nucleus of NGC 404. The integral colour of the galaxy changes slightly along the radius, and its mean value is (V − I) = 1.1. On the HST images situated at 9 from the galaxy center there are many red giants. This means that the size of the disk of NGC 404 exceeds 20 kpc. The value of the mean metallicity of the red giants in the disk is [Fe/H] = −1.11.
