Classification of FABP isoforms and tissues based on quantitative evaluation of transcript levels of these isoforms in various rat tissues

Abstract: In mammals, 10 isoforms of fatty acid-binding protein (FABP) are expressed in various tissues. To understand the role of multiple FABP isoforms, we have quantitatively examined the transcript levels of individual FABP isoforms in each of various tissues by Northern blotting using synthesized RNAs corresponding to the mRNA of each isoform as external standards. As a result, absolute transcript levels of individual FABP isoforms expressed in each tissue were successfully determined. The 10 FABP isoforms were cla… Show more

“…Among these FABPs, FABP6 have been found to be highly expressed in the ileum of rats and the distal intestine of zebrafish (Yamamoto et al 2009;Du 2011). In this study, its expression pattern in the intestine is much closer to that of zebrafish than to that of mammals (Supp .…”

“…FABPs are ubiquitously expressed proteins with the various members of this family differing in tissue expression patterns (Haunerland & Spener 2004, Yamamoto et al 2009). The present quantitative study in the mouse testicular tissue showed, to our knowledge for the first time, cell-compartmentalized and timedependent variations in the gene expression of five simultaneously assessed FABP members, which is indicative of a differential regulation of their expression at specific stages of spermatogenesis.…”

“…They promote the uptake and intracellular transport of fatty acids, guide them to specific metabolic pathways, and participate in cell growth by regulating the expression of specific genes (Haunerland & Spener 2004, Furuhashi & Hotamisligil 2008. In mammals, ten FABP members with different tissue-dependent patterns of expression have been described (Yamamoto et al 2009). All FABPs have the same primary role with potential differences in ligand selectivity for long-chain fatty acids, binding affinity, and binding mechanism.…”

“…Nonenzymatic cytosolic FABPs are abundantly expressed in numerous animal tissues with high rates of fatty acid metabolism. FABP has 10 isoforms that are distinctly distributed in various tissues in mammals and that have distinct mechanisms in different organs and cells (5). Among them, heart-type (H)-FABP, also referred to as FABP3, is most predominantly expressed in the heart and less in the skeletal muscle, kidney, stomach and testis (5).…”
