Classification, kinds, taxonomic stability and conceptual change

Abstract: Scientists represent their world, grouping and organizing phenomena into classes by means of concepts. Philosophers of science have historically been interested in the nature of these concepts, the criteria that inform their application and the nature of the kinds that the concepts individuate. They also have sought to understand whether and how different systems of classification are related and more recently, how investigative practices shape conceptual development and change. Our aim in this paper is to pro… Show more

“…In this case, as in others, cognitive neuroscience may need to devise proprietary kinds, alongside those of (cognitive, developmental) psychology and (cellular, systems) neuroscience, rather than poach on those terrains. This may, in fact, be an instance of what Sullivan (2017, p. 141) has called "coordinated pluralism" in taxonomy, urging researchers in psychology and neuroscience to "collaboratively structure their conceptual and methodological practices in ways that more adequately facilitate taxonomic change" (see also Mattu & Sullivan, 2021).…”

“…severity as the main definitional predicate for pandemic declaration, rather than geography and virology." 35 Philosophical interest in psychiatric taxonomy goes back at least to Hempel (1965); for further discussion of Hempel's view and an overview of philosophical discussions of classification with particular attention to psychiatry, see Mattu and Sullivan (2021). 36 Apart from explicit discussion of the category mentioned in the DSM-5, I will use the term "autism" rather than "autism spectrum disorder," since it is not clear whether the condition should be conceived as a spectrum or as a disorder.…”

“…physically and emotionally towards their children), and stunting (chronic growth disorders of children due to lack of nutritional intake over a long period). The solution that can be done when children have problems during their development is to collect data from various sources to explore the root of the problems faced by children to identify problems and symptoms that appear in children (Detel, 2015;Mamat et al, 2014;Mattu & Sullivan, 2020). After the symptoms of the child's problems are seen, then the causes of the problems encountered arise, then the treatment is given.…”
