Clarifying the Relationship Between ABO/Rhesus Blood Group Antigens and Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Abstract: ABO blood group O had an important role in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The impact of blood group on rebleeding and mortality may be a focus for further studies.

“…Moreover, the percentage of H. pylori-positive patients presented with DUs was higher than GU patients in the present study, with epigastric pain as a major complaint as reported by many others [48,67,68]. Higher incidence of H. pylori infection was within blood Group O phenotype patients with Rh positivity compared to other blood groups [69,70]. Many other studies showed higher frequency of DU among patients with blood Group O with significantly higher H. pylori positivity [47,52], including Iraqi population [70].…”

“…Another association of the ABO blood group phenotypes refers to the incidence of haemorrhage of the upper gastrointestinal tract due to stomach ulcer. As a relevant study demonstrated, the incidence of haemorrhage of the upper gastrointestinal tract presents to be higher for the O blood group, as well as for the people classified as Rh + (Bayan et al. , 2009).…”

“…It seems that vWf levels are 25% higher in non-O compared to group O individuals 16 . An interesting finding is that the rebleeding rate between patients with different blood groups was similar 40 . At the same time, some other studies find determination of blood groups not being a useful tool to determine the individual risk for gastroduodenal ulcer and ulcer bleeding 41,42 .…”

“…The relationship between blood group antigens and peptic ulcer disease, especially with upper gastrointestinal bleeding was widely evaluated in the past and one of the studies found that the blood group O had higher frequency in the group with bleeding ulcer than in the control group compared to other blood groups 40 . The reason for bleeding is due to the level of the circulating plasma protein von Willebrand factor 15 .…”
