Yan'an City is a typical squeezed city in China and faces the challenge of limited living space. The adoption of the “Mountain Excavation and City Construction (MECC)” program was poised to elevate the city's livability. Despite the importance of megacity construction projects, few studies have examined their impact on urban livability. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the effects of MECC and the satisfaction characteristics of urban livability in Yan'an City, based on survey data from both old and new urban areas. Employing factor analysis and multiple linear regression, this paper assesses the influence of MECC on urban livability across different demographic groups, including age, educational background, and occupation. The empirical findings demonstrate a significant positive effect of the MECC project on urban livability. However, during categorization discussions, some respondents expressed concerns about its negative impact. The results of multiple linear regression indicate that factors such as career prospects, residential satisfaction, interpersonal relationships, and transportation level significantly influence livability (R2 = 0.607 in ND and R2 = 0.609 in OD).

How to Enhance Citizens’ Sense of Gain in Smart Cities? A SWOT-AHP-TOWS Approach

The previous technology-centric development of smart cities mainly focuses on the numbers, diversities, and types of applied intelligent technologies, while the citizen-centric smart city has become an important paradigm for improving the sustainability of cities around the world. The citizens’ sense of gain (CSG) , which considers both material acquisition and spiritual feelings of smart city services, is thus proposed and regarded as one of the core orientations in the smart cities’ transformation development process from the centric of advanced technology applied to the centric of citizen subjective perception. To shift smart cities from being technology-centric to citizen-centric, it is critical to identify the factors influencing CSG and develop appropriate strategies to enhance CSG in smart cities. Hence, this work identifies 17 key CSG influencing factors based on the dimensions dissected from the definition of CSG and it further formulates 15 strategies for enhancing CSG by adopting the SWOT-AHP-TOWS method based on data collected from Nanjing citizens. The results indicate that the most important criteria for enhancing CSG in smart cities are the external opportunities, which are originated from citizens’ attitudes and behaviors, and the top-ranked strategy is “dividing smart infrastructure into different categories according to the hierarchy needs of citizens and promoting the synergy development of smart infrastructure within and among different categories”. Finally, four implications are proposed, including (i) strengthening publicity and encouraging citizen participation, (ii) clarifying the responsibilities of local governments, (iii) prioritizing citizens’ needs, and (iv) promoting age-friendly, vulnerable-friendly, and environmental-friendly development.

Taking the environmental landscape design of Jinghe Art and Culture Center as an object, this study explores innovative design methods and strategies by combining artificial intelligence and digital space technology. Through an in-depth analysis of the site characteristics and functional needs of the Art and Culture Center, this study proposes a landscape design method based on artificial intelligence to provide a scientific basis for landscape design. At the same time, the study also explores the application of digital space technology in landscape design, including virtual reality technology and augmented reality technology, which can help designers and users to feel the design scheme more intuitively, thus improving the quality of design and user participation. This study combines artificial intelligence and digital space technology with environmental landscape design to provide new ideas and methods for the innovative design of Jinghe Art and Culture Center. Through scientific analysis and technical means, it can better satisfy people's needs for art and cultural experience and add unique charm and vitality to urban development.
