Citizen Science in Information Systems Research

Abstract: Science communication is becoming increasingly important, also in information systems (IS) research, as it is increasingly demanded when applying for research funding or academic positions. In 2019, e.g., the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research published a keynote paper highlighting the increasing importance and necessity of appropriate science communication to receive funding (BMBF 2019). Similar requirements have certainly been formulated by many other institutions that provide research funding… Show more

“…In general, annotations may critically improve and speed up model work (e.g., Amershi et al 2015 ). Nevertheless, there is a risk that annotations for large datasets may be costly when created by experts or may not warrant the expected quality of results when created by citizen scientists (e.g., Weinhardt et al 2020 , p. 275) or crowd workers. Depending on the type of ML task or data and annotation task, hybrid approaches where just parts of the data get annotated may be possible.…”

“…Lastly, the understanding of the integration of participatory approaches into platform design leads to a new field of application: Digital Citizen Science (Weinhardt et al 2020). In contrast to classical citizen science approaches, the public might participate in research not only by providing or gathering data but that they might be empowered to actively contribute to science through formulating their own research questions, developing their own hypotheses and finally discussing those transparently and interactively with other citizens and researchers.…”

“…If the current situation remains like this or will occur more often in the future, new ways of conducting experimental research have to be evaluated. In our last editorial (Weinhardt et al 2020), we discussed the application of citizen science in Information Systems research. As many aspects of life (work, schooling, social interaction) moved back into the homes of citizens, this now seems to be more current and relevant than ever before.…”
