Circulating miR-130a-3p is elevated in patients with cerebral atherosclerosis and predicts 2-year risk of cerebrovascular events

Abstract: Background Cerebral atherosclerosis (AS) leads to high risk of cerebrovascular events. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic performance of serum microRNA-130a-3p (miR-130a-3p) in cerebral AS patients, and construct a logistic risk model for 2-year cerebrovascular events on the basis of the prognostic potential of miR-130a-3p. Methods Serum samples were collected from 74 cerebral AS patients and 62 control individuals, and miR-130a-3p expressi… Show more

“…It has also been proposed as a plasmatic biomarker for several diseases, 16,17 including mild cognitive impairment 18 . MiR‐130a‐3p (accession: MIMAT0000425) was elevated in serum from patients with cerebral atherosclerosis 19 and tended to show higher plasma levels in atrial fibrillation patients with high CHA2DS2‐VAS scores (a tool for stratifying AF patient with risk of stroke 20 ) and lower plasma levels in patients who underwent catheter ablation 21 . MiR‐320b (accession: MIMAT0005792) is a member of the miR‐320 family and its lower levels of plasma miR‐320b were associated with increased occurrence of acute myocardial infarction in Chinese populations 22 .…”

“…Downregulation of miR-130a-3p expression leads to endothelial barrier dysfunction in the development of AS ( 161 ). Paradoxically, serum miR-130a-3p was elevated in cerebral AS patients and provided a possible method to predict cerebrovascular events ( 162 ). The different expressions of miR-130a-3p in AS period indicated the potential ability in AS diagnosis.…”
