Circulating lipid peroxidation, plasma and erythrocyte antioxidant status in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the levels of lipid peroxidation, and both plasma and erythrocyte antioxidant states in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The population consisted of 60 subjects divided into two groups, 30 subjects had evidence of rheumatoid arthritis and age and sex matched healthy subjects were studied as controls. The level of plasma and erythrocyte thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was markedly increased in both the rheumatoid arthritis patients when compared to cont… Show more

“…We have also demonstrated that Lipid peroxidation reflected by MDA levels significantly increased in RA patients compared to normal healthy subjects; these results are in agreement with many studies in plasma 6,20 , in erythrocytes 4 and in synovial fluid 13,15 . As a whole, the negative correlation deduced between MDA and the activities of GPx and CAT 13 confirm the pro-oxidant effect of MDA in RA onset.…”

“…In fact, many studies have shown that the antioxidant system was impaired in patients [4][5] and oxidative stress markers were increased in patients with RA 6,7 . To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study performed in Tunisian patients with RA and the largest RA study population actually analysed for oxidative stress parameter correlations.…”

“…It has been well established that free radicals and reactive oxygen species are involved with the pathogenesis of RA [7,8]. There is also evidence showing increased levels of oxidative stress among RA patients when compared to controls [9] and the balance between reactive oxygen species production and the antioxidant defense system is disproportionate in RA [10].…”

“…Other key modulators of joint inflammation in RA are reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) end‐products. Large amounts of ROS and LPO products have been detected in the serum and synovial fluid of inflamed rheumatoid joints, and this production can be induced by cytokine stimulation [Remans et al, 2005; Pasupathi et al, 2009]. LPO products, mainly 4‐hydroxynonenal (HNE), form adducts with proteins and make them highly immunogenic.…”
