Circulating Concentrations of Dehydroepiandrosterone and Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate During Puberty

Abstract: In order to quantitate the chronological change in circulating dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DS) levels during the period of sexual maturation, serum DHEA and DS concentration (3-5 PM) in 76 boys and 65 girls (ages 8 to 15) as well as in adult male and female subjects were measured by a specific and sensitive radioimmunoassay technique. Our data show a progressive and parallel increase in serum DHEA and DS concentrations in boys, and adult male levels were reached earlier fo… Show more

“…These results are consistent with those of previous research showing that basal plasma and salivary cortisol levels change only slightly throughout childhood and adolescence, whereas DHEA secretion shows a stronger increase with age (Ducharme et al 1976;de Peretti and Forest 1976;Parker et al 1983). In our study, however, we did not detect the sharp increase in DHEA levels that has been reported to occur in conjunction with adrenarche (Hopper and Yen 1975). Furthermore, although some studies have reported a sex difference in the timing of the increase in DHEA relative to adrenarche, or in overall DHEA concentrations (Ducharme et al 1976; de Peretti and Cortisol (nmol/l) Sample Fig.…”

“…As noted, cholesterol sulfate and DHEA sulfate are two of the most abundant steroid sulfates in the human circulation where their concentrations overlap, although the mean level of the latter sulfoconjugate tends to be somewhat higher (34,(37)(38)(39). There is, however, a remarkable age-dependent decrease in plasma DHEA sulfate from its postpubertal peak (46,47), whereas there appears to be no age-dependent change in the level of plasma cholesterol sulfate (37).…”

“…These are two of the adrenal steroids which show a rapid increase during the years before puberty, at adrenarche (Crumbach, Richards, Conte & Kaplan, 1978 ;Ducharme, Forest, DePeretti, Sempe, Collu & Bertrand, 1976;Hopper & Yen, 1975).…”
