Day-to-day Variation of Salivary Cortisol and Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in Children from a Rural Dominican Community

Abstract: This study examines day-to-day patterns of salivary cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) under baseline conditions and in response to mild stress among 59 children residing in a rural Caribbean village. Cortisol secretion showed the typical circadian variation with high levels in the morning. Children showed significant increases of cortisol before and during a videotaped interview when compared to routine days. DHEA levels were positively associated with cortisol levels; however, within-day secretion of… Show more

“…The challenge before human evolutionary biologists and psychologists is to understand how these general neuroendocrine systems have been modified and linked with other special human cognitive systems (e.g., Allman 1999;Ponzi et al, 2014;Ulrich-Lai and Herman, 2010) to produce the unique suite of human family behaviors. Analysis of hormonal responses to social stimuli may provide important insights into the selective pressures that guided the evolution of these key aspects of the human mind.…”

“…The plasma analysis of cortisol is considered a fair biomarker indicator of stress induced by the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal 14 . The assessment of cortisol in saliva is correlated positively with its blood concentration, reflecting about 5 to 10% of serum concentration 15 and can perfectly substitute plasma for analysis.…”
