Circulating biomarkers of angiogenesis as indicators of left ventricular systolic dysfunction amongst patients with coronary artery disease

Abstract: Background. Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) are often asymptomatic. Angiogenesis is implicated in the physiology of vascular repair and cardiac remodelling, and is one of many pathophysiological processes implicated in heart failure. We hypothesized that plasma indices associated with angiogenesis [angiogenin, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and angiopoietin (Ang)-1 and Ang-2] would be abnormal in CAD patients with LVSD, being correlated w… Show more

“…37 Angiopoietins bind to the endothelial tyrosine kinase receptor Tie-2 to exert context-dependent biological functions, 37 and circulating levels of Ang-2 and Tie-2 have been associated with CVD risk factors (e.g., hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and abdominal obesity). 38 Ang-2 has previously been found to have a positive association with PP. 37 Our study did not find an association between PP and Ang-2; however, we found a positive association between PP and Tie-2.…”

“…Furthermore, level of these biomarkers were associated with measures of subclinical disease13 and target organ damage in hypertension 14. While these preliminary data suggest an important role for angiopoietins along the CVD continuum, the clinical and genetic correlates of Ang-2 and the soluble form of its receptor Tie-2 have not been evaluated in a large community-based sample.…”

“…A standard curve of the recombinant Ang-1, Ang-2 or sTie-2 proteins provided was prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions. The kits are widely used in many research groups for detection of Ang-1, Ang-2 or sTie-2 in serum/body fluid/liquid reagents (Iribarren, et al, 2011;Lukasz et al, 2008;Patel et al, 2009;Scholz et al, 2007;Wang et al, 2007). In the current study, the detection limit for Ang-1 was 180 pg/mL, 125 pg/mL for Ang-2 and 320 pg/mL for sTie-2.…”
