Circular RNAs: Functions and Clinical Significance in Cardiovascular Disease

Abstract: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Accumulating research has indicated the possible roles played by circular RNAs (circRNAs) in the pathogenesis of CVD. CircRNAs are non-coding RNAs with covalently closed loop structures. CircRNAs can function by acting as miRNA sponges, RNA binding protein sponges, mRNA transcriptional regulators and templates for protein translation. The specific characteristics of circRNAs such as high stability, abundant distribution, and tissue- an… Show more

“…CircRNAs are non-coding closed-loop RNAs known as microRNA (miRNA) sponges and gene transcriptional or post-transcriptional regulators [ 10 ]. The specific characteristics of circRNAs such as abundant distribution, differential expression and high stability confer them the potentials as diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for human diseases [ 10 ]. CircRNA_010383 has been reported as a miR-135a sponge to increase the level of TRPC1 in regulating the high glucose (HG)-induced renal fibrosis in DN [ 11 ].…”

“…Emerging reports indicate that circRNAs regulate important functions and are closely correlated with diverse human diseases [15,16]. In our previous study, we had presented the differential circRNA expression pro les in the placenta of FGR fetuses.…”
