Circular RNA and its potential as prostate cancer biomarkers

Abstract: Advancing knowledge of the transcriptome has revealed that circular RNAs (circRNAs) are widely expressed and evolutionarily conserved molecules that may serve relevant biological roles. More interesting is the accumulating evidence which demonstrates the implication of circRNAs in diseases, especially cancers. This revelation has helped to form the rationale for many studies exploring their utility as clinical biomarkers. CircRNAs are highly stable due to their unique structures, exhibit some tissue specificit… Show more

“…Further works properly distinguishing EVs from non-vesicular circulating factors by size exclusion chromatography for instance 57 , will address whether some of these extracellular entities contain distinct types of noncoding RNAs. Nevertheless, Our results come as further support of considering these noncoding RNAs as surrogate circulating markers and regulatory elements for prostate cancer progression 58 .…”

“…The identification of circRNAs has been complicated by bioinformatics challenges, however the development of improved detection methodologies and statistical methods has aided circRNA research, particularly with improvements in reducing false-positive detection rates (Szabo and Salzman, 2016). In PCa, a number of circRNAs have been identified which have been identified as potential biomarkers (Tucker et al, 2020). Our laboratory previously identified the circRNA, hsa_circ_0004870, to be associated with resistance to the androgen receptor Sawada et al, 2020) *References refer to the previous identification of these genes in cancer.…”

“…Increasing evidence suggests that circRNAs play a role in cancer pathogenesis (Vo et al, 2019). At present, many researchers have reported that circRNAs can function as markers of prognosis and diagnosis of many cancer types such as prostate cancer (Tucker et al, 2020). Moreover, circRNAs regulate cancer cell growth, metastasis, and drug resistance (Liang et al, 2020;Ma et al, 2020).…”
